Mandarin for Beginners: Start with Speaking
In brief
A beginner can start Mandarin speaking with one near-term situation, two or three complete phrases and a short response drill. Learn the meaning and tone-marked pinyin, say each phrase aloud, then answer one likely question without reading. Build pronunciation and vocabulary inside these small conversations instead of waiting until you feel ready to speak.

First speaking task
Order one drink and make one simple request.
我想要一杯咖啡。
I would like a cup of coffee.
谢谢。
Thank you.
- Why this works
- The task is short but complete: open the exchange, respond to a choice and close politely.
- Try it aloud
- Say the order without reading, answer whether you want it hot or iced, then close with 谢谢.
Using this guidance
- Useful for
- Adult beginners who want an immediate speaking task while they build tones, pinyin, characters and vocabulary.
- How Hanlo applies it
- Hanlo narrows the first session to a practical outcome and shows characters, pinyin and meaning together.
- Watch for
- Waiting to master all pronunciation or grammar before speaking delays the retrieval practice that conversation needs.
- Limit
- Situation practice should complement, not replace, systematic work on listening, pronunciation, characters and grammar.
Start narrower than “learn Chinese”
Choose something you may actually say this week. A greeting, an order or a direction question gives new sounds and grammar a concrete use.
Learn complete expressions
Individual words matter, but a complete expression gives you word order, rhythm and politeness at the same time. Notice the reusable frame, such as 我想要一杯… for ordering one cup of something.
Use a simple weekly rhythm
Repeat one situation over several short sessions: understand it, say it with support, recall it without support, answer a changed question and revisit it before the real conversation.
Questions
Should a beginner learn tones before speaking?
Learn the tone system early, but practice tones inside useful words and sentences as well as in isolated drills.
Should I learn characters or pinyin first?
Pinyin can help you start speaking, while characters preserve meaning and reduce ambiguity. Seeing both together is useful; your emphasis can follow your immediate goal.
How many phrases should I learn in one session?
Two or three phrases are enough when you also practice recalling them and responding in context. Add more only when the first set is usable.
