Mandarin Speaking Practice: A Practical Starting Point
In brief
Effective Mandarin speaking practice combines a clear situation, a short phrase you understand, repeated aloud recall and a response from the other speaker. Start small: learn one natural sentence, say it without reading, then use it in a two- or three-turn exchange. Hanlo is designed around this situation-based practice loop.

Ten-minute practice example
Order a drink and answer a follow-up question.
我想要一杯咖啡。
I would like a cup of coffee.
可以少放糖吗?
Could you use less sugar?
- Why this works
- The task joins a reusable sentence pattern to a likely follow-up, so practice includes both recall and listening for the next turn.
- Try it aloud
- Say the order without reading. Then answer “hot or iced?” and make the sugar request.
Using this guidance
- Useful for
- Beginners and returning learners who want to turn recognized Mandarin into language they can say in a real exchange.
- How Hanlo applies it
- Hanlo organizes aloud practice around one real situation and keeps the useful phrases available for later review.
- Watch for
- Reading a phrase repeatedly can feel fluent while avoiding recall; look away and answer a likely follow-up.
- Limit
- Short guided practice cannot reproduce every accent, background condition or social pressure of live conversation.
Build practice around an outcome
“Practice Mandarin” is too broad for one session. “Order a coffee and answer whether I want it hot or iced” gives you a finish line and tells you what language belongs in the session.
Move from reading to recall
First understand the characters, pinyin and meaning. Then say the sentence with less visual help. Finally, hear or imagine the other person’s reply and produce your next turn.
- Read and listen to one complete sentence.
- Repeat it slowly without changing the tones into flat syllables.
- Look away and retrieve the sentence from the situation.
- Answer one likely follow-up or change one detail.
Keep correction focused
Correcting every syllable at once can stop the conversation. Pick one pronunciation feature and one expression pattern, practice the complete line again, then return to the exchange.
Questions
How often should I practice speaking Mandarin?
Short, regular sessions are easier to repeat than occasional long sessions. Choose a schedule you can sustain and revisit phrases before you need them.
Should I use pinyin while speaking?
Use tone-marked pinyin as reading support, then gradually look away and recall the complete phrase from the situation.
What should a beginner practice first?
Start with one near-term conversation and two or three high-utility expressions, then practice the likely follow-up question.
